Sclerotherapy in Burlington

Sclerotherapy is the process of injecting varicose and spider veins with a special salt water and sugar solution. This solution irritates the blood vessel lining. The irritation causes the blood vessel lining to expand and form a scar, closing the vein off.

Sclerotherapy is performed through a series of injections. At the end of this process the veins will look and feel better. The procedure can vary from person to person, with results showing immediately for most, though clients with larger veins may need multiple sessions before they begin to vanish completely.

After fully completing your treatment sessions, your final results should be permanent. Because the solution injected causes the blood vessel lining to close, the treated veins should disappear and be gone for good.

However, because this is not a preventative treatment, new veins can appear over time. To prevent the appearance of new varicose or spider veins, avoid standing for long periods of time, avoid excessively crossing your legs, make sure you’re maintaining a healthy weight and that you’re exercising regularly.

After you’ve completed a sclerotherapy treatment, our nurse injectors will provide you with post-care instructions. These may include the following:

1. Keep cotton balls on the treated area for 3 to 4 hours post treatment. Because the medicine was injected inside the walls of the veins, it needs to be kept in place to be as effective as possible.
2. Try to avoid strenuous activity or exercise for at least 48 hours. Exercise increases the flow of blood to the veins which can dilute the solution and weaken its effectiveness.
3. Avoid sun exposure, bathtubs, and heat. Sclerotherapy treats spider veins and varicose veins, and you may experience tenderness in the treated areas. While this usually subsides after a few days, to ensure proper healing, it’s essential to avoid heat. Heat can cause the veins to dilate which leads to increased pressure and blood flow in the treated area. This can cause discomfort, swelling, redness, or even the formation of blood clots. If you must go outside, wear protective clothes, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants to keep the treated area covered.
4. Don’t take blood thinners or aspirin.
5. Wear Your compression stocking. These stockings work by exerting the most pressure at the ankle and gradually decreasing pressure as they move up the leg.
6. Drink plenty of water to help flush out any remaining solution from the body.
